New Year in Zurich

We spent New Year’s Eve of 2024 in Zurich. I didn’t really know much about the place beforehand - we’d just heard it had a good fireworks display and that it was a beautiful city on the lake.

It’s a calm place. Spotless. You get the sense that the money of the world sits quietly in vaults beneath the pavement. Trams slide past almost silently, not even a grubby fingerprint on the windows.

OK.This is the first world.

First steps

We wandered for the first day. Wrapped up warm, camera in hand, and wandered. The morning light was cold. We stopped for breakfast in an overcrowded café that clearly owed its popularity to excellent Google reviews.

From there we drifted toward the river, passing through a square anchored by a beautiful church. A little further on, an open area opened up around a fountain overlooking the water. Even from above, the river looked impossibly clear - you could see the birds diving underneath the water.

We followed the sound of the clock tower chiming, moving with the flow of people as if being gently summoned.

Down by the river, the morning began to warm slightly in the sun. People gathered across the bridges, pausing to take photos of the ever-present Grossmünster. The city felt busy, but never rushed.

The lake

Lake Zurich begins where the Limmat ends. We walked along the bank past the large plaza and the opera house, then on toward a classical public swimming area - very Wes Anderson - before continuing into a broad lakeside park.

Above us, blue skies were crisscrossed with aeroplane trails. Below, the calm bassline of the lake was accompanied by cyclists, runners, walkers, skaters.

It’s a place to people-watch, or to be people-watched. The smooth, composed Zurich energy is at its strongest here.

The lights

Night arrives quickly in winter, and even the way Zurich lights itself feels deliberate.

Controlled. Mature. There’s a sense of luxury, but never excess.

Buildings glow softly and reflect off the waters of the Limmat, its clear surface now an icy black. Trams continue their routes, lights gliding along rails with quiet precision.

Conversations stay low. Footsteps echo briefly, then disappear.

Nothing demands attention, but everything rewards it.

New Year’s Eve

As midnight approached, people gathered along the riverbanks and bridges. There was anticipation, but none of the chaos you might expect elsewhere. When the fireworks came, they were bold and beautiful - colour breaking the restraint for a few moments before fading again.

People applauded. Some hugged. Most simply stood and watched.

Then, almost immediately, the city began to empty. Within minutes, Zurich felt like itself again.

On the same night, projections lit up the Grossmünster towers - one last moment of colour and spectacle before everything settled back into quiet.

Morning after

The next morning felt like a reset. Empty streets. Pale winter light. The lake calm again, as if nothing had happened at all.

Zurich doesn’t cling to celebration. It allows the moment, then lets it go.

Final thoughts

Zurich won’t suit everyone at New Year. It isn’t loud, or wild, or performative. But if you enjoy walking cities slowly, watching light change on water, and letting a year end without too much noise, it’s a very good place to be.

It doesn’t ask for attention. It simply earns it.
